Meetings

Meetings are held at 10:00 a.m. on the second Saturday of January, April, and October at the Currituck County Public Library (4261 Caratoke Hwy, Barco, NC).

The July meeting is held on the second Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. to avoid tourist traffic.

Meetings are open to anyone interested in the topic presented or in genealogy in general. Visitors are welcome.

Saturday, January 14, 2017
• 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Business meeting (open to all; AGS members vote)
• 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. "North Carolina Genealogy Research" and "Overview of DNA for Genealogy" by Ms. Diane L. Richard, professional genealogist. Each one-hour lecture includes a question and answer period at the end and a brief break between lectures.
Ms. Diane L. Richard has been giving talks nationally on genealogical topics since 2006 and is a member of several North Carolina and national genealogical organizations. She is a listed researcher at the North Carolina State Archives, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University, and also has access to the Library of Virginia and all Washington, D. C. repositories. She appeared in the Bill Cranston episode of “Who Do You Think You Are”. Ms. Richard is Owner and President of Mosaic Research and Project Management (MosaicRPM).

Saturday, April 8, 2017 with 35th Anniversary Celebration!
• 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Business meeting (open to all; AGS members vote)
Meet with AGS members and officers. Only AGS members can cast a vote, but all ideas from members and non-members are always welcome. Help shape the future of AGS.
• 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Tama Creef, Outer Banks History Center Archivist, will present "Currituck County: Pictures of the Past"
• 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. 35th Anniversary Celebration of Albemarle Genealogical Society (meet founding members and join the celebration).

Wednesday, July 12, 2017
• 7:00 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. Business meeting (open to all; AGS members vote)
• 7:15 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. "Genealogy Assistance Night"
Join the Currituck County Public Library and Dare County Library Research Assistance staff and all other participants at the Currituck County Public Library in Barco to share research methods and findings. Gather in the Meeting Room, then the library will be open to participants. Computers and all genealogy print resources will be available for your use. You will be guided how to use online and print resources to find your ancestors. Free, no registration required.

Saturday, October 14, 2017
• 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Business meeting (open to all; AGS members vote)
• 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. "Basic Military Research" and "Researching Your Civil War Ancestors" by Mr. Craig R. Scott, Certified Genealogist. Each one-hour lecture includes a question and answer period at the end and a brief break between lectures.
Mr. Craig R. Scott, CG, FUGA is President and CEO of Heritage Books, Inc., a genealogical publishing firm with over 5,100 titles in print. A researcher for more than twenty-eight years, he specializes in the records of the National Archives, problem solving and publishing. He was awarded the Grahame T. Smallwood, Jr. Award by APG in 2008 and the UGA Silver Tray Award in 2009. A nationally known lecturer and educator, he has appeared in the Ancestry Show and the MacNeil Lehrer News Hour.

• 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. "Hammering at the Brick Wall: Strategies to Overcome Your Genealogical Research Obstacles" by Ms. Janeth L. Murphy. Genealogist Ms. Murphy discusses strategies to overcome obstacles encountered when your family history research hits a dead-end or “brick wall”. Question and answer period is included at the end of the presentation.
Ms. Janeth L. Murphy is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and a part-time employee of Currituck County Public Library. She is a graduate of the Boston University Genealogical Research Program, the National Genealogical Society’s Graded Study Course and the National Institute for Genealogical Research (National Archives). Ms. Murphy has presented to various local genealogical societies, and chaired the 2013 AGS Genealogy Conference and was also a presenter. She specializes in Native American Genealogy (Six Nations) and Civil War Records.

Other Genealogy Meetings of Interest:
The Currituck County Public Library in Barco has a Genealogy Club that meets the first Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. Registration is requested, but not required to attend this informal group of genealogy enthusiasts who share research methods and findings.
